Five Senses Taste Party

 Today, we had a five senses taste party in Science Workshop. Students were able to taste many sweet, salty, and sour foods. After we tasted an item, we recorded our data. When all items were tasted and recorded, we picked our favorite! Can you guess the items our scientists liked the most? You can have a taste party at home with your little one too. Have fun exploring!

This friend recorded that an apple (APAL) was sour, a doughnut (DONOT) was sweet, and a pretzel (PRITSR) was salty. Way to go scientist!

Readers to Leaders Kickoff

Every year, our principal celebrates students who are reading in the classroom and at home. To encourage our students to get started on the million words they need to read this school year, Mrs. Phillips committed to getting "pied" if they made the promise to meet their reading goals for the year. Of course our class agreed to meet their goals! Our little ones loved seeing their principal "clown" around at school. What a fun experience! We can't wait to let you know about our next Readers to Leaders assembly. Our school really is the GREATEST SCHOOL ON EARTH!

Five Senses

Essential Question: How can we describe objects using our five senses? 

Today, students explored their five senses using popcorn. We had so much fun! They were able to listen to the popcorn pop, smell, taste, touch, and use their sense of sight to describe the popcorn. We loved hearing their responses for each sense! For the next two weeks, we will continue to explore and dig deeper into each sense. Make sure to check the blog for updates on our little scientists.

Kindergarten Math...What does it look and sound like?

 

After lunch, students take out their white boards and practice writing their numerals from 1-10. We love singing this song as we practice. By the end of kindergarten, students should be able to read and write numerals from 0-20.

We put our white boards away and take out our math binders for Math Workshop. When all of our materials are ready, we transition to the floor for calendar math and fluency practice. Fluency is very high paced and energetic. We are currently practicing how to count forward beginning from a given number within the known sequence.

  

Each lesson includes fluency, an application problem, concept development, and a student debrief. This week we are focusing on classifying objects into given categories, counting the number of objects in each category, and sorting the categories by count.

At the end of our day, we have math stations. Students are able to explore manipulatives and practice skills we are currently learning.

Math Workshop

Our objective this week: Analyze to find two objects that are exactly the same or not exactly the same.

We discussed the attributes of the different socks, guiding students to use the new terms exactly the same and not exactly the same. Each student was given a sock. When the music started, they walked around the room to look for their match. When they found their match, they linked arms. We are very proud of our little mathematicians! Way to go!!

You can practice this activity with your child at home. Show your child a baseball and a tennis ball. Ask your child if the items are exactly the same or not exactly the same.

How do we make observations?

In Science Workshop, students learned how to make an observation. We look very closely at details and use our five senses. We practiced walking around the room and drew some of our observations. Leave a comment and tell our little scientists how proud you are of them!

Star Names

 “Star Names” is the name of the program that we use to introduce the letters and sounds in kindergarten at Chets Creek.


 Our Star Name routine:
1. Say their name.
2. Cheer their name.
3. Count the letters in his/her name.
4. Clap out their name.
5. Put together the pieces of his/her name.
6. The star student is interviewed by his/her classmates. What is your favorite book? Do you have any brothers or sisters? What is your favorite activity?
7. We try to think of words that begin with the same sound of the star student's name.
8. We share what we learned about his/her name.

           After the Star Name student is interviewed, every student draws a picture of him/her. The student gets to take all of these drawings home as a gift.

Make sure to ask your child all about the Star Name student.
